MS MR - “Dance Yourself Clean” (LCD Soundsystem cover)

Love this cover. MS MR is a NY based duo made up of vocalist Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow. They instantly remind me a bit of the XX. However, they seem a lot more capable of towing that fine line between utilizing darker tones and emitting dreary sounds. Don’t get me wrong, the XX makes beautiful music. However, they make beautifully melancholic music that makes you feel like its OK to be sad sometimes. MS MR seems much more adept at keeping that glimmer of light alive within those chillingly potent minor chords. I think a big part of that is how obvious it is that they are having so much fun while making and performing their music. They seem like true “students of the game” and they seem very happy to be doing what they are doing. It shows through their coy smiles that peak out throughout their songs.

The other thing separating MS MR from many other similar bands is Lizzy’s booming voice. It is Florence Welch good. A seamless juxtaposition between powerful potency and pure loveliness. If you ever have a chance, check them out live. You will get goosebumps. That loveliness shows through in this cover and it gives it more of a sense of play that seems to escape LCD Soundsystem sometimes. The musicality is also very crisp in what seems like a very difficult song to cover.

They play Webster Hall in New York tonight, hop up to Canada, over to San Fran, and then to Europe before returning back to the States for Lolla in early August. Full dates here.

All Bands on Deck Ft. Poolside, Yacht, and Baio taking place at the Santa Monica Pier this Saturday put on by the Echo and KCRW.

Headlining is Poolside above. That will be some pretty picturesque music accompanying the sunset.

Also can’t wait to hear Shangri’LA by Yacht right next to the ocean. What better way to back up their line ‘If I can’t go to Heaven let me go to LA’ than playing a show right next to the ocean? We should go have a drink on the Shangri’LA rooftop hotel afterwards.

I also recommend checking out Baio. That is Chris Baio the 2nd cousin of Scott Baio and more well known for being the bassist of Vampire Weekend. Check out his song Sunburn Modern which was inspired by his trip to Mexico with his girlfriend where he got a sunburned that looked like modern art.

I also heard a newly formed band called Panda Boat Party is playing a pregame somewhere in Venice. Hida ya Pandas Hide ya wives.

Foals “My Number”

Song is dope. Reminds me a little bit of PAPA “I am the Lion King”. Little bit. Kind of a synth heavy latish 80’s feel. Part of what makes St. Lucia so good. Maybe it reminds me of PAPA meets St. Lucia. Just a posit. What is it about synths that sound so good these days? They do though I swear.

I also like songs about giving someone your number. Phoenix “If I Ever feel Better” for instance. Heard the new Phoenix album is great by the way. Excited to hear it. I like but don’t love Entertainment but I’m eager to hear the whole album. Papa asks for her number too in “I am the Lion King” but and maybe that is where I see the resemblance to Foals but I think its more than that. Anyways, happy friday. Here is to Friday and hoping Daft Punk pops up underneath Phoenix at Coachella. That will most likely receive its own post soon enough. Stay tuned for recommended weekend plans.

Dreadzone “Little Britain”

I had never heard this song before or of this band before. I was surprised to find out it is from 1995. It predates Keri Strug’s gold medal. It however sounded very relevant to me on the morning commute as it came on KCRW. Its up tempo, has a lot going on, and overall has a pretty happy vibe. The video is pretty weird but I had to post it instead of just the audio file. Happy Friday from me and Dreadzone.

We pretty much love everything Of Monsteers and Men. From the work they do at the North Wall on the Night’s Watch, to putting out one of the best albums of 2012. Seriously, it still gets massive radio play and I have yet to get tired of it. Very pumped to see them live again at Coachella where the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s will also play. The two bands also come together in the song as Of Monster’s and Men pays them a bit of tribute.

Fitz & The Tantrums “Out of My Leauge”

I thought this was a Matt and Kim song at first but then I thought, “When did Matt and Kim ever get down like that? Charlie how your angels get down like that”. Well something like that. I wish I knew about this band back when they had a residency at the Satellite. That would have been fun. Still hoping they will play an LA show soon. Maybe the Fonda or the El Rey. Or the Satellite for old time sake. Anyways, catchy song that I think could have some legs. Some funky legs.

You can catch them on the Bruno Mars tour so if you go A) make sure you buy your girlfriend flowers and B) show up early enough for Fitz.

Mr Little Jeans “Oh Sailor” feat the Silverlake Conservatory of Music Youth Chorale

I love this song. It’s catchy, it makes me feel good, and it features the hippest youth chorale in America. Much hipper than any youth chorale in Williamsburg. I heard it on KCRW for the first time and it has been difficult to find. Seems like its only available in Europe right now even to stream. Probably a publishing thing. Shout out to JFK lives who probably knows more about cool stuff than you for helping me find this song. We saw Mr. Little Jeans back at Filter Mag’s Culture Collide and she was great then. You may recognize her from Rescue Song and her cover of Arcade Fire’s the Suburbs. I hope this song is on the radio soon… or at least an insurrance commercial.
